Martine Courage is an Ottawa-based jazz vocalist and piano player who has performed in various Ottawa and area venues, such as Gigspace, the Almonte Jazz ‘n House concert series, Sante, Vineyards, Perth’s CC’s on the Rideau Ferry, Beckta, Festival Japan and Zola’s, to mention a few.
She has also twice performed at the Ottawa Jazz Festival as part of larger jazz ensembles led by Rob Frayne, and once at the Baby Grand Theatre in Kingston (on voice and trumpet) for a jazz musical.
She studied voice with Ranee Lee (Montreal) and Tena Palmer (Toronto), and has studied piano with Steve Boudreau, J.P. Allain and Ian Clyne.
Martine specializes in re-arranging jazz standards, updating them with funk, pop and soul to create her very own style. Her lush, intimate vocals and stripped-down piano playing are modeled on her jazz hero, Shirley Horn.
Martine performs with Courage4 (see below), the Davina Pearl Trio, and in duos with other local jazz musicians such as Garry Elliott, Mike Essoudry, Vince Halfhide, and Roddy Ellias.

Courage4 plays off-the-wall arrangements of funk, pop and folk-infused jazz standards. The local group features the atmospheric vocals and piano stylings of Martine Courage, the warm, melodic violin of Laura Nerenberg, the deep jazz roots of Rob Frayne on bass and tenor sax and the funky drums of the groovy Mike Essoudry.
